My name is Angie Stone and I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October of 2021 at the age of 49. The dreaded "C" word that no one wants to hear was spoken to me, on the phone, while I sat in my office at work. While trying to wrap my brain around the words, my mind was reeling as to how I was going to handle the news. From telling my family and staff to figuring out what the next year of my life was going to entail. Well.........As you have heard many people say....It changed my life! The first step was telling my children, and this is an important one because it was the point where I realized that positivity would be of utmost importance during this journey. Telling them was the hardest thing I have ever had to do and realized my attitude was the one controllable factor in this uncontrollable hand I had been dealt. The support system I have and the attitude I carry has made my diagnosis a blessing in disguise. The first word out of my mouth, to those who ask me how I am, is BLESSED. I have been blessed more in the last year of my life than I ever have been before.
From my double mastectomy to chemo to radiation and another surgery due to complications, I have been surrounded by amazing doctors, nurses, family, friends and strangers, each of them playing a part in forming my, soon to be realized, mission. Each step of the way has been for a reason.............and that reason is America's Girls.
Positivity has gotten me to where I am today and has led me to exactly where I need to be, and that is making sure girls are doing their monthly breast self-exams. I did not do them, and I strongly believe if I would have, I may have been saved from some of the roads I had to go down. SO the concept of creating a Lifesaving Experience was born. Our goal is to make them remember this experience on our bus FOREVER, which in turn, will remind them to do their monthly exams. In addition to the bus Experience, the girls will download an app on their phones, that will offer different features including a monthly reminder to do their exam. Once completed, they will click the box that will enter them into a drawing for scholarships and prizes for one year. We want to make sure the girls continue their exams until it becomes a life lasting habit.
Our America's Girls bus is the catalyst for our mission. The bus is designed to create the interest necessary to hold the attention of the girls. Filled with information, goody bags and personal attention, the experience will last a lifetime.
Welcome to America's Girls! We are here to educate you on the importance of breast self-exams and to give you the tools to continue what you learn today for the rest of your lives. Come on in, sit down and let us educate, encourage and inspire you to take control of your health.
